How the scam works

A scammer may call your business pretending to be:

  • Your IT service provider, or

  • Your internet service provider.

They'll ask a staff member to "test" the payment terminal by:

  1. Processing a purchase transaction using a card they provide (this transaction is often declined), then
  2. Processing a refund back to the same card (this refund may be approved).

The purpose of the call is to trick your business into sending money to the scammer.

How to help protect your business

  • Be cautious of unexpected calls asking you to test your EFTPOS terminal.

  • If you're unsure who you're speaking to, end the call and contact your IT service provider or internet service provider using the phone number you already have on file.

  • Never process a refund unless it relates to a genuine customer transaction.

  • Make sure your staff know about this scam and understand they should never follow these instructions from an unsolicited caller.

  • If something doesn't seem right, verify the request before taking any action.

If you receive one of these calls

  • If you did not process any transactions or refunds: No further action is required.

  • If you processed a transaction or refund: Please contact us immediately on 1300 124 486 or email mercrisk@worldline.anz.com so we can attempt to contact the Issuer and initiate the recovery process; however, we cannot guarantee a successful outcome.
